The Lie Beneath Temptation
Read: James 1:13, 16–17
“Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God…
”
There is always a lie underneath temptation. The lie is not just about the behavior. It is about
God.
Temptation whispers:
“If God were really good…
”
“If God weren’t withholding…
”
“If God understood your need…
”
“If God wanted you happy…
”
At its core, temptation questions God’s character. It paints Him as restrictive.
James corrects that immediately:
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above…
”
God is not withholding goodness. He is protecting you from counterfeits. If it is truly good, it
comes from Him. And if it does not come from Him, it is not ultimately good. Temptation thrives
when you distrust God’s timing. Freedom grows when you trust His goodness. If you believe
God is stingy, you will grab. If you believe God is generous, you will wait.
Deep Reflection
Where have I subtly believed that God is withholding something good from me?
Do I trust His timing — or resent it?
Prayer
Father, restore my confidence in Your goodness. Let Your character become more convincing
than temptation’s promise.
