Saved by Grace

Romans 5:8

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8 (KJV)

When I thought about where to begin our month of Living in Grace, John 3:16–17 seemed like the obvious choice. It is one of the most familiar passages about God's love and His gift of salvation.

But Romans 5:8 spoke a little louder to me this week.

Not because it is better than John 3:16. Not because one verse matters more than the other. I just needed to hear this one.

“While we were yet sinners…”

God loved us so much that He sent His Son, but He didn't wait for us to become some perfect version of ourselves before He loved us.

He didn't wait for the version of us we hope to become.

He didn't wait until we had everything figured out, stopped making mistakes, or finally became the person we thought we were supposed to be.

He loved us while we were still sinners.

And that means He loves us right now.

Imperfect.
Still growing.
Still learning.
Still making mistakes.
Still becoming more like Christ.

Sometimes we can fall into the trap of thinking we have to become better before we can fully receive God's love. We can look at our failures and think, Surely God would love me more if I could just get this part of my life together.

But Romans 5:8 reminds us that God's love was never something we earned by becoming good enough.

Love wasn't waiting for me to become worthy. Grace wasn't waiting for me to get it right.

Grace meets me exactly where I am.

That doesn't mean God doesn't want to change us. He does. He calls us to grow, to repent, to become more like Christ, and to live differently because of what He has done for us.

But we don't change so that we can be loved.

We get to change because we are loved.

There is freedom in that.

I don't have to spend my life trying to become a perfect version of myself before I believe that God loves me. I don't have to earn what Christ freely gave.

I can come to Him as I am—and let His grace continue the work of making me who He created me to be.

Maybe that's where living in grace begins:

Knowing that I am already loved, even while I am still becoming.
