Wisdom Has A Source

Theme Scripture:
“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” — Proverbs 4:7 (KJV)

When Solomon became king, God gave him an extraordinary opportunity. He could have asked for wealth, power, long life, or victory over his enemies. Instead, Solomon asked:

“Give me now wisdom and knowledge…” — 2 Chronicles 1:10

And God granted his request.

That tells us something important: true wisdom has a source, and that source is God.

First Kings 4:29–30 says God gave Solomon “wisdom and understanding exceeding much,” greater than the wisdom of the people of the East and Egypt. Solomon would go on to speak three thousand proverbs and more than a thousand songs (1 Kings 4:32). Solomon was intelligent, but Scripture makes it clear—his wisdom was given by God.

Not Everything Called Wisdom Is Wise

The world has its own definition of wisdom, but worldly wisdom and godly wisdom are not the same. James 3:17 describes wisdom from above as “first pure, then peaceable, gentle…full of mercy and good fruits.”

Godly wisdom isn’t simply knowing more. It is seeing life from God’s perspective and allowing His truth to govern how we live.

That is why Scripture says:

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge.” — Proverbs 1:7

The fear of the Lord is reverential awe—recognizing His holiness, sovereignty, authority, goodness, and truth. Before we can walk in wisdom, we must recognize the One from whom wisdom comes.

Get Wisdom—and Understanding

Solomon tells us:

“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” — Proverbs 4:7

Some things require more than a quick answer. They require prayer, meditation, listening, and time with God. There is often meaning beyond what we first see.

Sometimes wisdom begins by admitting, “Lord, I don’t understand. Teach me.”

Solomon did exactly that. Instead of pretending he knew everything, he recognized what he lacked and asked God for it.

And God supplied it.

Attribute of God: The Giver of Wisdom

Godly wisdom isn’t merely information we collect; it becomes a way of life. It shapes our decisions, words, relationships, reactions, and priorities.

James 1:5 reminds us:

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally…”

The God who gave Solomon wisdom is still the God who gives wisdom today.

Personal Reflection

There are times when I don’t need another opinion or more information. I need wisdom from God.

I want to slow down enough to seek Him, listen, and allow His Word to shape how I see what is in front of me. I don’t simply want to know what God says—I want the understanding to live what God says.

Prayer

Father, You are the source of true wisdom. Give me wisdom and understanding that come from You, not from this world. Teach me to slow down, listen, and seek You before I move. Let Your wisdom shape my decisions and become visible in the way I live. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
