From Believing In God to Believing God

“Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe.”
— St. Augustine

Every one of us is a believer. The question is not if we believe, but what we believe.

Our beliefs shape the way we live. They influence how we respond to trials, relationships, fear, uncertainty, unanswered prayers, and even God Himself. We often live from the convictions of our hearts long before we ever speak them with our lips.

Theme: From Believing in God to Believing God

There is a difference between believing in God and believing God.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
— John 3:16 (KJV)

Jesus is not simply someone we acknowledge—He is the One in whom we place our faith.

James gives us an important warning:

“Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.”
— James 2:19 (KJV)

Simply acknowledging that God exists is not the same as trusting Him. Biblical faith goes beyond agreement. It places the full weight of our lives upon Jesus Christ.

Emphasis: What We Believe Changes How We Live

Faith is not merely something we confess with our mouths. Eventually, what we truly believe will show itself in how we live.

Jesus said:

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
— John 14:15 (KJV)

Faith trusts Him enough to obey when obedience is costly.

Think of a parachute on a failing airplane. You can believe the parachute exists. You can understand how it works. You can even tell everyone around you that it can save them. But when the moment comes, you must be willing to put it on and trust it with your life.

Knowing about Jesus is not the same as entrusting our lives to Jesus.

That is where belief becomes faith.

Attributes of the God We Trust

Faithful — God keeps His promises.

“Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:24 (KJV)

Good — His character remains good even when our circumstances are difficult.

“O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.”
— Psalm 34:8 (KJV)

Sovereign — Nothing takes God by surprise. He remains Lord over what we understand and what we do not.

“But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.”
— Psalm 115:3 (KJV)

Compassionate — He meets us with mercy.

“It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.”
— Lamentations 3:22 (KJV)

Unchanging — Circumstances change. Feelings change. People change. God does not.

“For I am the LORD, I change not.”
— Malachi 3:6 (KJV)

Our circumstances should never define God’s character. God’s character should define how we interpret our circumstances.

Faith That Changes How We Live

When we genuinely believe God, our faith begins producing something in us.

Fear does not have to make every decision.

Bitterness does not have to survive every wound.

Despair does not have to have the final word.

And obedience does not have to wait until we understand everything.

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:7 (KJV)

Sometimes faith means standing on God’s Word while everything around us appears to say something different. It means trusting what God has spoken more than what our eyes can presently see.

The cross proves His love.

The empty tomb proves His power.

His Word reveals His character.

And every promise invites us to know Him more deeply.

Personal Application

I have learned that my faith is revealed less by what I say and more by where I place my trust.

Every unanswered prayer, delayed promise, unexpected valley, and uncertain road eventually brings me back to the same question:

Do I merely believe in God, or do I believe God?

When circumstances become difficult, what do I believe about His goodness?

When the answer has not come, what do I believe about His faithfulness?

When I cannot understand what He is doing, what do I believe about His sovereignty?

And when I cannot see the road ahead, do I trust Him enough to take the next step?

The more we know God’s heart through His Word, the more we learn that He can be trusted.

May we move beyond simply believing that God exists and begin living like we believe what He has said.

Because what we truly believe about God will eventually determine how we walk with God.

Prayer

Father, anchor my heart in Your truth. Teach me not only to believe that You exist, but to believe Your Word and trust Your character in every season. Strengthen my faith when I cannot see the path ahead and give me courage to obey when obedience costs me something. Help my life reflect Your goodness, faithfulness, compassion, and love so that others may see Jesus through me. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
