A Righteousness That Begins in the Heart
Matthew 5:20 (KJV)
“For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.”
Emphasis: Genuine righteousness flows from a heart transformed by God.
Attributes of Christ: Righteous, pure, and authentic.
Theme: Jesus calls us beyond outward religion into inward transformation through the work of God’s Spirit.
When Jesus told His followers that their righteousness must exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees, those words must have sounded almost impossible.
The scribes and Pharisees were known for meticulous religious observance. They knew the Law. They followed rules. From the outside, they could appear extremely righteous.
Yet Jesus was revealing something deeper.
He wasn’t simply asking His followers to perform more religious works than the Pharisees. He was teaching them about a different kind of righteousness.
Jesus teaches a refined righteousness—one that reaches beyond outward behavior and deals with the condition of the heart.
More Than Outward Obedience
It is possible to do the right thing for the wrong reason.
It is possible to appear obedient while our hearts remain distant from God. We can say the right words, perform the right actions, and maintain the appearance of righteousness while something very different is happening within us.
Jesus continually went beneath outward behavior and addressed the heart.
Christlike character isn’t simply learning how to look righteous.
It is allowing Christ to transform us until our outward actions become an expression of what God has done inwardly.
Our actions and our hearts should tell the same story.
God Always Intended to Transform the Heart
Long before the Sermon on the Mount, God promised that a day was coming when His work would reach deeply into the human heart.
“I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts…” — Jeremiah 31:33 (KJV)
Then Ezekiel gives us another beautiful promise:
“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you…” — Ezekiel 36:26 (KJV)
And God continues:
“And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes…” — Ezekiel 36:27 (KJV)
God was never satisfied with appearances alone.
He wanted the heart.
Through Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit, God changes us from within. Obedience begins to flow from a transformed heart rather than merely from external pressure.
That is where genuine Christlike character develops.
Transformation Produces Authentic Influence
When the Holy Spirit changes the heart, eventually that transformation becomes visible in life.
Righteousness begins affecting our motives, our conversations, our relationships, our reactions, and our decisions. We don’t simply behave differently—we begin becoming different.
This is the difference between religious appearance and spiritual transformation.
Jesus is not calling us to become better performers. He is calling us to become transformed people.
The character of Christ cannot simply be worn on the outside. It must be formed within us.
Life Application
Matthew 5:20 causes me to look beyond what others can see and ask God to examine what is happening inside my heart.
Am I simply doing what looks right, or is my obedience flowing from genuine love for Christ? Do my outward actions agree with my inward motives? Are there areas where I have concentrated more on appearance than transformation?
I don’t want to simply look like I follow Jesus.
I want His character formed within me.
I want His righteousness to shape my decisions, His purity to shape my motives, and His Spirit to continually transform my heart.
Prayer
Father, go beyond my outward actions and transform my heart. Write Your truth within me and fill me with Your Spirit. Remove anything in me that does not reflect the character of Christ. Let my obedience flow from a heart completely surrendered to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
