A Living Faith
A Living Faith Built on the Living Word
“The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.” — Isaiah 40:8 (KJV)
One of the greatest gifts God has given us is His living Word. The Bible is not a relic of the past, nor is it merely a collection of ancient stories preserved for history’s sake. Scripture is living, active, and continually revealing the heart of God to those who seek Him.
Hebrews 4:12 reminds us:
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword…” (KJV)
The word quick means alive. God’s Word is living and breathing. It speaks to every generation because its Author is alive. While cultures change, technology advances, and generations come and go, the truth of God never loses its relevance.
When we share our faith, something beautiful happens. Our own foundation grows stronger. Faith was never intended to be hidden away. Every testimony strengthens not only those who hear it but also the one who speaks it. As we recount God’s faithfulness, we remember His promises. We are reminded of where He has brought us, and our confidence in Him deepens.
Building Upon the Foundation
In nearly every area of life, we expect progress.
Each generation builds upon the discoveries, wisdom, and experience of those before them. We create better medicine, improve technology, develop stronger methods of communication, and continually search for more effective ways to live and serve others.
Why should our spiritual lives be any different?
Sadly, many believers assume spiritual maturity means simply preserving the traditions of previous generations without personally pursuing God. They desire to believe exactly as their grandparents believed, worship exactly as they worshipped, and never venture deeper into the riches of God’s Word.
Our spiritual heritage is precious, but it was never meant to become a ceiling.
Our parents, grandparents, pastors, and mentors provide us with a foundation, but they were never intended to replace our own relationship with Christ.
Paul writes:
“For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 3:11 (KJV)
Jesus—not tradition—is the cornerstone.
Those who came before us are building blocks God graciously used in our lives. Their obedience gives us somewhere to begin. Their testimonies encourage us. Their faith inspires us. But eventually each believer must personally study the Scriptures, seek the Holy Spirit, and develop an intimate relationship with Jesus.
God has no grandchildren.
He only has sons and daughters.
Every generation must come to Him personally.
Growing Beyond Those Who Came Before Us
There is something wonderfully humbling about hoping those who come after us walk farther with Jesus than we ever did.
As parents, grandparents, teachers, and mentors, our desire should never be for others to remain where we are spiritually.
Instead, we should pray they surpass us.
Imagine a generation whose prayer life is deeper than ours.
Whose understanding of Scripture is richer.
Whose faith is stronger.
Whose compassion is greater.
Whose obedience is quicker.
That is not dishonoring previous generations.
That is fulfilling their legacy.
Just as a relay runner passes the baton without expecting the race to stop, faithful believers pass truth to the next generation expecting them to continue running with endurance.
Paul encouraged Timothy this way:
“And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” — 2 Timothy 2:2 (KJV)
Notice the progression.
Paul taught Timothy.
Timothy taught faithful people.
Those faithful people taught others.
God’s design has always been multiplication, not stagnation.
The Word Still Speaks Today
Sometimes people treat the Bible as though it belongs only in another century.
They dust it off during difficult seasons, searching for comfort, only to return it to the shelf once life settles down.
But Scripture is far more than an emergency handbook.
It is God’s voice continually speaking to His people.
The Bible addresses our fears, our marriages, our parenting, our work, our identities, our purpose, our suffering, and our hope.
The same Word that transformed lives thousands of years ago still transforms hearts today because the God who inspired it has never changed.
Jesus Christ is:
“The same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” — Hebrews 13:8 (KJV)
Since He never changes, His Word never loses its power.
The culture may shift.
Opinions may change.
Truth does not.
God’s Word has always been ahead of its time because it came from the One who exists outside of time.
Don’t Settle for Borrowed Faith
There comes a moment when inherited beliefs must become personal convictions.
Borrowed faith may inspire us, but it cannot sustain us.
Reading someone else’s favorite verses is wonderful.
Listening to sermons is valuable.
Learning from mature believers is essential.
But eventually we must open the Scriptures ourselves.
We must pray.
We must ask questions.
We must seek the Lord until His Word becomes alive in our own hearts.
The Holy Spirit delights in revealing truth to those who hunger for it.
Jesus promised:
“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth.” — John 16:13 (KJV)
That promise still stands.
The Spirit who inspired Scripture also illuminates it.
Leave a Legacy of Pursuit
More than anything, I hope future generations are not impressed by my knowledge of God but inspired to know Him for themselves.
I hope they take every truth I have shared and build upon it.
I hope they search the Scriptures more diligently.
Love Jesus more deeply.
Trust Him more completely.
Walk more boldly.
My prayer is not that they simply repeat my spiritual journey, but that they continue building upon the foundation Christ has laid.
That is how faith grows from generation to generation.
Not by preserving empty tradition.
But by continually pursuing the living Savior through His living Word.
The Bible is not an old book struggling to remain relevant.
It is the eternal voice of God speaking into every generation with the same authority, wisdom, and life that it carried when it was first written.
The Word is still living.
The Spirit is still moving.
Jesus is still the Cornerstone.
And there is always more of Him to know.
Life Application
Ask yourself these questions today:
Am I living on someone else’s faith, or am I cultivating my own relationship with Jesus?
Am I studying God’s Word with the expectation that He will speak to me today?
Am I leaving behind a legacy of tradition alone, or a legacy of pursuing Christ?
What spiritual truths can I pass on that will encourage the next generation to go even deeper with God?
May we honor those who came before us by continuing to grow, always remembering that Jesus is our foundation and God’s living Word is still transforming lives every single day.
Prayer
Father, thank You for giving us Your living Word. Help us never to treat Scripture as merely an ancient book, but as Your living voice speaking truth into our lives today. Build our faith as we study, share, and live Your Word. Let our relationship with Jesus grow deeper each day, and may our lives inspire future generations to pursue You even more passionately. Keep Christ as the cornerstone of our lives, and lead us by Your Holy Spirit into all truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
