Positioned for His Glory: How Anna Recognized Jesus
Emphasis: Positioning Ourselves for His Presence
Attribute: Spiritual Discernment
Theme: “And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.” — Luke 2:38 (KJV)
Jesus was brought to the temple as an infant as Mary and Joseph fulfilled the requirements of the law. To most people passing through that day, he probably looked like another baby being carried into the temple.
But one woman saw something more.
Anna recognized Jesus.
Luke 2:36 introduces her: “And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser…”
Scripture gives us only three verses about Anna, but those verses show us a woman whose entire life had positioned her to recognize the glory of God when it appeared.
Positioned Through the Presence
Anna was a prophetess. She had learned to listen for God in a time before believers experienced the indwelling Holy Spirit as we do under the New Covenant.
Luke also tells us she was the daughter of Phanuel, a name associated with the face of God. How fitting that a woman whose life became devoted to seeking God’s presence would be among those who recognized the face of the Messiah.
Anna was also from the tribe of Asher, one of the northern tribes of Israel, yet we find her in Jerusalem. Somewhere along the way, her life had brought her to the very place where she needed to be.
God had positioned her.
Positioned Through Waiting
Luke tells us Anna “departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.” — Luke 2:37
She waited a long time.
But she wasn’t wasting time.
She worshiped while she waited. She prayed while she waited. She fasted while she waited. She stayed close to the place associated with God’s presence.
Then one ordinary day, Mary and Joseph walked through the doors carrying Jesus.
Anna had spent years seeking the presence of God, and suddenly the One greater than the temple was standing in the temple.
Jesus would later say:
“But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.” — Matthew 12:6 (KJV)
Her years in God’s presence had prepared her for that moment.
How Did She Recognize Him?
There was no crown on His head.
No throne.
No army surrounding Him.
He was an infant being carried by His mother.
Yet Anna recognized something that could easily have been overlooked.
For hundreds of years, Scripture had been pointing toward this Child.
“Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” — Isaiah 7:14 (KJV)
Micah had declared that the promised ruler would come from Bethlehem (Micah 5:2).
The promises had been spoken.
Anna had been waiting.
And when the Promise entered the room, she recognized Him.
I believe there is something powerful about spending time in God’s presence. The more familiar we become with His voice and His Word, the more prepared we become to recognize His hand when He moves.
Positioned for His Glory
John later wrote of Jesus:
“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory…)” — John 1:14 (KJV)
Anna was positioned to behold that glory before Jesus ever preached a sermon, performed a miracle, healed a sick person, or raised anyone from the dead.
She recognized Him before the evidence everyone else might have wanted appeared.
She recognized Jesus because she had spent her life looking for Him.
And once she recognized Him, her response was immediate.
She thanked God.
Then she started talking about Jesus.
Luke says she “spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.”
Scripture doesn’t tell us exactly what Anna said, but it tells us enough.
She had encountered Jesus, and she couldn’t keep Him to herself.
Life Application
Maybe the question isn’t simply, Is God moving?
Maybe the question is, Am I positioned to recognize Him when He does?
Anna teaches us to stay close to God through worship, prayer, fasting, His Word, and faithful waiting. We don’t earn His presence through these things. They train our hearts to recognize the One who is already near.
Don’t despise your waiting season.
God may be using it to sharpen your spiritual vision.
Stay in His presence. Stay in His Word. Keep worshiping. Keep praying. Keep looking.
Those who spend their lives looking for Jesus learn to recognize His glory—even when everyone else sees something ordinary.
Prayer
Father, position my heart for Your glory. Teach me to seek You faithfully and recognize Your presence even in ordinary moments. Sharpen my spiritual discernment through Your Word and Holy Spirit. Like Anna, let my first response to Jesus be worship and thanksgiving, and then give me courage to tell others about the One I have found. In Jesus’ name, amen.
