Solomon’s Prayer for Wisdom
Solomon’s Prayer for Wisdom in 1 Kings 3:3–9 is a foundational biblical model for leadership, humility, and seeking God’s will above personal gain.
The Context
The prayer takes place at Gibeon, where God appears to the young King Solomon in a dream and issues an incredible invitation: "Ask what I shall give you." Instead of asking for wealth, military victory, or a long life, Solomon requests the spiritual tools necessary to fulfill his royal duties.
Key Themes of the Prayer
Humility and Dependence: Solomon openly acknowledges his youth and inexperience, famously stating, "I am but a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in." He recognizes that leadership is a burden he cannot carry alone.
Recognition of God’s Covenant: He begins by honoring the legacy of his father, David, acknowledging that his own position on the throne is a result of God’s steadfast love and faithfulness.
The "Understanding Heart": The core request is for a shama heart (in Hebrew, meaning a "hearing" or "listening" heart). Solomon asks for the ability to listen deeply to God and to the people to discern between good and evil.
Servant Leadership: Solomon focuses entirely on the well-being of others, noting that the people he is ruling are God's chosen people, not his own.
The Outcome
God is deeply pleased that Solomon did not ask for selfish rewards. As a result, God grants him unprecedented wisdom, but also throws in riches, honor, and longevity as a secondary blessing.
BIBLICAL PRAYER - 1 Kings 3:3–9 NLT:
3.Solomon loved the Lord and followed all the decrees of his father, David, except that Solomon, too, offered sacrifices and burned incense at the local places of worship. 4.The most important of these places of worship was at Gibeon, so the king went there and sacrificed 1,000 burnt offerings. 5.That night the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, “What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you!”
6.Solomon replied, “You showed great and faithful love to your servant my father, David, because he was honest and true and faithful to you. And you have continued to show this great and faithful love to him today by giving him a son to sit on his throne.
7.“Now, O Lord my God, you have made me king instead of my father, David, but I am like a little child who doesn’t know his way around. 8.And here I am in the midst of your own chosen people, a nation so great and numerous they cannot be counted! 9.Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?”
