Keyword Study

  • Sin (ἁμαρτία / hamartia):

To miss the mark or fall short. Not just behavior, but a power or principle ruling the unredeemed.

  • Master (κυριεύω / kyrieuō):

To have dominion, to rule over as a lord or owner.

  • Law (νόμος / nomos):

The Mosaic law—God’s perfect standard, which exposes sin but cannot save.

  • Grace (χάρις / charis):

Unmerited favor. Divine enablement and power for transformation.

Main Teaching Points

1. Salvation Destroys Sin’s Legal Power Over You

Scripture: Romans 6:6–7, Colossians 2:13–15

Sin held legal dominion over us because of the law. But in Christ, our “criminal record” was nailed to the cross. We’ve not only been pardoned—we’ve been transferred to a new jurisdiction: grace. Sin may still tempt, but it no longer owns you.

  • Before Christ: Sin was your master.

  • In Christ: You’ve changed spiritual citizenship.

You were guilty, but the Judge became your Advocate—and erased your sentence.

2. Dead People Don’t Sin—They Stay Buried

Scripture: Romans 6:11, Galatians 5:24

You are no longer who you were. Sin’s voice can shout, but it’s talking to a corpse. When Paul says to “reckon yourselves dead,” he means believe what is already true—and live from that truth.

  • You are no longer available for sin’s manipulation.

  • The old you has no rights, no voice, and no power.

Dead people don’t argue with temptation—they’re already gone.

3. Freedom Doesn’t Mean You’re in Charge—It Means God Is

Scripture: Romans 6:17–18, 1 Corinthians 6:19–20

Grace doesn’t free you to do what you want—it frees you from what once ruled you. The Christian life is not self-governed, it’s God-governed. True freedom is living within the boundaries of righteousness that bring life.

  • You are no longer a slave to sin—but you are now a servant of righteousness.

  • God’s boundaries aren’t bondage; they’re protection and purpose.

You’re not just free from sin—you’re free for righteousness.

4. Grace Doesn’t Excuse Sin—It Empowers Obedience

Scripture: Titus 2:11–12, Jude 1:4

Grace isn’t a hall pass—it’s power for transformation. When rightly understood, grace doesn’t lower the standard—it lifts you to it. It trains, strengthens, and emboldens you to say “no” to sin and “yes” to holiness.

  • Cheap grace excuses sin. True grace eradicates it.

  • If grace hasn’t changed you, you haven’t really received it.

God’s grace doesn’t pat your sin on the head—it crucifies it.

5. There Are Only Two Paths: Death or Life

Scripture: Romans 6:21–23, Galatians 6:7–8

There is no neutral ground in spiritual life. You are either sowing to the flesh or the Spirit. The path of sin ends in death—always. But in Christ, you’ve been offered eternal life, now and forever.

  • The wages of sin are earned. The gift of God is received.

  • God doesn’t pay what we deserve—He gives what we could never earn.

Every choice either feeds death or fuels life. Choose wisely.

Reflect & Respond

  • Where has sin been trying to reclaim authority in your life?

  • Do you truly believe you’re no longer under sin’s rule—or are you still living like a slave?

  • How are you partnering with grace to walk in obedience, not just forgiveness?
